The New Normal: Life Now

If you see me out and about, I probably look like the exact same Tim from before October 2024. I’m back to working, living my life, LOVING it, and looking forward to the future! But the reality of a Traumatic Brain Injury is that a lot of the lingering challenges happen behind the scenes.

Here is a little glimpse into what my day-to-day actually looks like right now.

Brain Fog & The Afternoon Wall

While my cognitive skills are sharp—I’m back to managing complex tasks and staying fully engaged—my physical stamina for sustaining that focus has changed. During work meetings, I am alert, taking notes, and completely dialed in to company business. But behind the scenes, my brain is burning a lot of fuel to maintain that high level of attention. Sometimes that intense focus triggers instant, repetitive yawns that I have to actively try to hide or fight back! It’s embarrassing, and REAL! (I promise I’m not bored, it’s just my brain working overtime).

Because of that, brain fatigue happens a lot, especially on work days. By the afternoon, my brain simply runs out of gas. The exhaustion gets so heavy by the end of the day that there have been many evenings where I’ve actually fallen asleep at the wheel driving home from the office. (Thank goodness for Full Self-Driving! IFKYK)

The Invisible Emotional Toll

Beyond the physical fatigue, recovering from a TBI brings some emotional hurdles, including navigating the waves of depression that often accompany a head injury. Surviving a major life event also naturally shifts your landscape. Part of figuring out this “new normal” is realizing that big life events can sometimes cause people’s paths to go in different directions. Having to adjust to the fact that some daily relationships and connections just aren’t there anymore is an emotional adjustment, but I am focusing my energy on moving forward and building the next chapter.

Thank You

I am still learning how to navigate my energy levels and this new normal every day. I don’t expect anything from anyone, but I want to say a huge thank you to those who have continued to be patient with me. Thank you for checking in, and for understanding the invisible parts of this journey. It means the world.
